Mr. Toshimune Suto from Rusutsu Resort shared with of the links to two movies that let us have a look at what is waiting for us in the ski resort that will host the 2011 FIPS World congress.

The Mark Labow Award

The Mark Labow Award is created and sponsored by Dr. Sam Labow to honour hisbrother Mark Labow, the founding president of F�d�ration Internationale des Patrouillesde Ski (�FIPS�).

The award is presented on the occasion of each FIPS Congress to an individual ororganization who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the aims and objectives ofFIPS.

The award is managed by a Board of Trustees which has full discretion as to the selection process and any other matters. The Board is made of four Trustees, in the event of the resignation, death or incapacity or refusal to act of any Trustee, the remaining Trustees shall promptly appoint another Trustee in his stead.

The first presentation of this award will take place at the 18th FIPS Congress, April 2011.

Institute of Mountain Emergency Medicine

Marie let us know about the Institute of Mountain Emergency Medicine --thank you Marie!--; it was founded in 2009 and is a branch of EURAC-European Academy of Bolzano.

From the Institute's presentation page, we understand that "Its main aim is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of casualties and acutely ill patients in mountainous regions by raising the standard of Alpine emergency medicine to an internationally recognised �evidence-based� level.".

In their agenda there is work shop scheduled in spring 2011 on mountain Emergency Medicine for Europe. At this moment on their website there is no mention of this meeting but we will keep you updated.

Ski Patrol Olympics in Squaw Valley

Hans Gerremo, from SLAO, let us know --thank you Hans-- that from Aprlil 16th to April 18th Squaw Valley ski resort will host the SKI PATROL OLYMPICS.

Ski patrolling course selection

On March, 27th the Ski patrollers' Professional board of our Region organized the test to access the upcoming ski patrolling course.

Fiftyseven candidates attended the selection and had to face four exercises to exhibit their capabilities.

They begun with a free run in which they had to execute a set of turn with growing radius; in the second run they've been asked to go through a few gates: nothing to share with a race course, just a fixed path to oblige them to execute the turns in specific points and with imposed radius.
The last two was focused on sideslipping and snow plow position: again a few gates were used to fix the paths the candidates had to follow. In the snow plow position test, after a couple of turn to the left and right, they had to stop on maxim steep between two gates and then start again.

The test session ended with an interview.

At the end of the day, twentyfour candidates passed the test and were admitted to the course.

Hello again... With the Haitian tragedy high on the international conscience this week... First of all I hope we are able to help out, in each SPO and as individuals. Next I ask for your continuing support of the project to have our rescue and first aid qualifications recognized across agencies, enabling more resources available when needed. As you may know ASPA have had (before 2007) their training programs accepted in a multijurisdictional federal environment by government departments including Education Ministries. Also the large scale disaster in USA New Orleans brought the inconsistencies of having trained and qualified people unable to help in the rescue and assistance so badly needed. The Tsunami is another excellent example of people wanting to help and where jurisdictions and agency territorial guarding made things more difficult. Even communication codes are now being re-examined and review of �plain-speak� instead of conflicting numeric codes was discussed with a view to having various agencies able to communicate at the most basic level, by radio, etc�. 10 6 = what? The European community is moving forward now to standardize training and qualifications in many professions and especially the so called health care sectors. Please ask your SPOs to be sure to have your programs entered in this data base and grid. Think not only outside the box� but outside the borders! TKS and help Haiti if you can ! Hello again FIPSers, patrollers and friends around the planet !

Merry Christmas Season and good health for all in 2010.

In the Northern Hemisphere we start our Ski season as the year closes
and the New Year begins. It is worth noting that some of our members mark
year changes at different times and some have snow in what we call summer. In
all cases we will gather in 16 months, in Japan, so please remember to use
some of these seasons to prepare for the next Congress, a new opportunity to
meet and share and learn.

This year a special thanks goes out to our friends in Sweden for hosting a
wonderful Congress at �RE last April.

In Italy recently FISPS celebrated 25 years of service to the skiing public
(Congrats). If your SPO has some special date or event to share with the
planet... just let us know and it will be posted to the FIPS web site and
circulated to all delegates from Snowbird and �RE (also many from
TIGNES too), those that have given us email addresses.

The Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver, Canada in a couple of
months. We wish every success to the patrollers involved in that widely
publicized event.

As Europe moves closer to standardized training, qualification and
accreditation standards we encourage our members to look beyond your
borders to future international norms.

Once again HAPPY HOLIDAYS and much success in 2010.
